I had the opportunity to present our "Building Better Credit" seminar at the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce in Scranton on July 23, 2008. It's amazing the things that people in general don't really think about. Most of the time people think about their credit being checked when they apply for a loan or a credit card, but not if they were shopping for car insurance or looking for a job. This is a common misconception. Therefore it is really important to stay on top of your credit.

Another common misconception is that some people are afraid to order a copy of their own credit report because they think it would show up as an inquiry and possibly bring down their credit score. This is one inquiry you DO want to make! Ordering your own credit report is considered a "consumer inquiry" and does not count toward the inquiries you see on your credit report that could bring down your score by making too many (such as credit card inquiries). You want to be sure everything on your credit report is accurate. Mistakes do happen or you can be a victim of identity theft and not even know it until you see a credit card listed on your credit report that isn't yours!

Building credit does take time, and unfortunately there are no quick fixes! But time is on your side! So be pro-active, order a copy of your credit report (at www.annualcreditreport.com) and get started! We are all eligible to get one free copy of our credit report every 12 months per credit reporting agency (Experian, TransUnion and Equifax). But only if you request it! This report will not include your credit score. If you want the score there will be a small fee.

If an individual needs help with creating a spending plan (Budget Counseling), getting credit card debt under control (Debt Management Plan), or reviewing your credit report (Credit Report Review), don't be afraid to call a reputable credit counseling service, such as Consumer Credit Counseling Service, to help you! We can be reached by calling 1-800-922-9537, or you can visit our website at www.cccsnepa.org. Budget Counseling is free and some small fees apply with our other services.
